A grande sonnerie strikes the hours and quarters as they pass, without being asked — the most demanding form a chiming watch can take, and the one that asks most of the case around it. Supersonnerie is Audemars Piguet's answer to that problem: a research programme into how a case can carry sound outward rather than absorb it, with the gongs and their mounting reconceived to project. Here it is executed in 41mm black ceramic, a material that resists wear and defeats conventional case-making in equal measure, against a sapphire dial with 18-carat sand gold hands and hour-markers, on a textured rubber strap with a sand gold three-blade folding clasp. What matters on examination: that the striking sequence runs correctly across the full cycle and holds its own power reserve; that any service was carried out by a specialist in chiming complications; and that acoustic performance has not been altered by later case or gasket work.
